Valentines Day

  • I was once vehemently opposed to valentines. Things have since changed. Many people continue, though, to oppose the day celebrated by lovers the world over. Some argue, like I once did, that it is worldly. Others say its roots are unknown at best and ignoble at worst and on that basis, it must not be celebrated. Still others argue that we must not show love on one particular day in a year but throughout, and thus boycott the day. Some do not celebrated in protest of how it has been commercialized.

Well, having now joined the proponents of the celebration of Valentine’s Day, I now say in defense of that great day, lighten up!

I have found that most people who do not like Valentine’s Day are opposed to it because they are not in a relationship with a significant other and thus shoot the day down to ruin the fun of those who indeed have a significant other. A sort of if-I-can’t-enjoy-the-day-no-one-should mentality.

To those who say I can’t celebrate it because love should be shown on every single day and not just one, I say lighten up! Valentine’s Day is simply a day on which a person takes the opportunity to show another how much they love and care for them. Why not take that opportunity?

To those who say they do not because it has been over commercialized, they are in trouble. Everything has been over commercialized. Will you quit it all?

To those who say it is worldly, valentines can be worldly. The best way of seeing whether your celebration of it is worldly lies in the question "why are you celebrating it?". Most guys do it to gain points with a girlfriend in order to bed her. That's worldly. Celebrating it in order to express ones love for a loved one is not.

To those who say its beginnings are ignoble I say would you turn a deaf ear and blind eye to your national football team’s endeavors to win the continent championship or perhaps world championship if you heard that football was first started by German soldiers during Hitler’s reign who kicked around the heads of Jews for fun during the holocaust? I doubt it.

I don’t know about you but I will most certainly capitalize on the opportunity to present a token of my love to my girlfriend on Tuesday the 14th of February!
